During the 1980s, the Information Technology services quality provided to the British Government by the IT professionals was not up to the mark. Responding to the growing dependence on Information Technology, British Government;’s Central Computers and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) along with the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) developed a framework for efficient and fiscally responsible use of IT resources within the British Government and the private sector. 

The earliest version of ITIL was known as Government Information Technology Infrastructure Management. Companies and enterprises were quick to adopt the framework in the early 1990s. Maturing over the years, services of ITIL and their acceptance has broken national barriers and have been accepted by the UK and the world alike. 
Let us look at the timeline of ITIL and everything relevant that followed:
  • 1980: ITIL released in the vision of standardizing IT management practices within the British Government 
  • 1990: ITIL accepted by the enterprises and country other than the British Government 
  • 2000: CCTA merged into OGC. Microsoft used ITIL to develop their proprietary Microsoft operations Framework (MOF)
  • 2001: ITIL 2 was released with updates. Within a few years, ITIL became the most widely used IT management framework in the world
  • 2007: ITIL 3 released where the framework adopted a lifecycle approach to service management. It also had a greater emphasis on business integration. 
  • 2019: ITIL 4 was released.
