Course Prerequisites

Here are the minimum required prerequisites for successfully undertaking the ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) course:

  • Educational Background: A diploma, associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree from a college, university, or technical school with accreditation accepted by ASQ. Depending on the degree, part of the required work experience may be waived:
    • Diploma from a technical or trade school – one year waived.
    • Associate’s degree – two years waived.
    • Bachelor’s degree – four years waived.
    • Master’s or doctorate – five years waived.
  • Work Experience:
    • A total of eight years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CQE Body of Knowledge.
    • A minimum of three years of this experience must be in a decision-making position. "Decision-making" is defined as having the authority to define, execute, or control projects/processes and being responsible for the outcome.
  • Alternative Qualifications:
    • CQE certification experience requirements can be met with experience used to qualify for certifications in related fields such as Quality Auditor (CQA), Reliability Engineer (CRE), Software Quality Engineer (CSQE), Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE),
