CentOS Linux is a community-supported, open-source Linux distribution derived from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), providing a free, enterprise-class computing platform for production and development environments. It historically served as a downstream rebuild of RHEL, offering binary compatibility and long-term stability, and was positioned as a cost-effective alternative for organizations seeking RHEL-like reliability without commercial support. Following the end of its release cycle, CentOS Linux 7 reached end-of-life on June 30, 2024, and no further versions including CentOS Linux 8 or 9 are being produced. The CentOS Project has transitioned focus to CentOS Stream, which serves as the upstream development platform for RHEL, with CentOS Stream 9 now being the primary rolling-release distribution. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) within the project continue to support niche use cases such as scientific computing and cloud infrastructure. This technology is for system administrators, DevOps engineers, and developers who require a stable, RHEL-compatible environment for application development, testing, or deployment, particularly those transitioning from CentOS Linux or evaluating enterprise Linux behavior in open-source ecosystems.
