Project Management Institute – Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA) is a certificate offered by the Project Management Institute. The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions. Maintaining the certificate requires a candidate to achieve 60 professional development units (PDUs) every 3 years. The prerequisites for this certification include:

  • Secondary degree - 7500 hours of work experience/Bachelor’s degree – 4500 hours of work experience
  • 2000 hours of work experience on project teams
  • 35 hours of education in business analysis


The Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) is a certification designed for entry-level Business Analysts and offered by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions required to be answered within 1 hour. The only prerequisite for this certification is 21 hours of professional development during last 4 years.


The Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA) is the second level of BA certification, after ECBA, which is offered by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). The exam consists of 130 multiple choice questions required to be completed within a duration of 3 hours. The main prerequisites to appear for this exam include a minimum of 3,750 hours of work experience in the last 7 years and a minimum professional development of 21 hours during the last 4 years.


The Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) is another or the third level certification offered by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). It follows CCBA. The exam consists of 120 multiple choice questions that a candidate must answer within a duration of 3.5 hours. The prerequisites that this certification demands include a minimum work experience of 3,750 hours in the last 7 years and a minimum of 21 hours of development in the last 4 years.


The Certified Business Analysis Thought Leader (CBATL) certificate is the fourth or the final level of certification offered by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), immediately after CBAP. Though the instructions related to the exam and prerequisites are not quite clear, a candidate applying for this exam must be a business analysis professional having over 10 years of experience and considered as an Industry Thought Leader.
