Cisco PIX Firewall Training Boot Camp
The certification and exam for Cisco PIX Firewall Specialist expired in November 2008. You can still opt for PIX/ASA Firewall training at Koenig but there is no exam and certification awarded at the completion of training.
PIX firewall training is a part of Cisco ASA Specialist certification. Cisco ASA Specialist certification has two modules SNAF and SNAA that cover foundation and advance of ASA respectively. SNAF covers all the topics of PIX firewall training.
Here are a few reasons why we cover SNAF module for PIX firewall training:
1) While the PIX is an excellent firewall, the landscape of security has changed over the years. It is no longer sufficient to protect your network with a stateful packet filtering firewall (PIX). There are so many new threats to a network—including viruses, worms, unwanted applications, phishing, and application-layer attacks. When a device protects against this variety of threats, we say it offers "anti-X" capability or "multi-threat" protection. PIX does not offer this level of protection.
2) Most organizations want an "all-in-one" device - or a unified threat management (UTM) device. ASA offers protection from these different types of attacks. It can even be more of a UTM device - however, it needs a Content Security and Control Security Service Module (CSC-SSM) to be a real UTM. This is the module in an ASA that performs the anti-X functions. Without the CSC-SSM module, the ASA functions more like a PIX that we will cover in SNAF.
3) An ASA typically costs less than similarly featured PIX and it is also a newer and faster technology. Remember, we can no longer rely solely on a firewall to protect our organizations from the varied threats of the Internet, a multifaceted approach is now necessary for complete protection.
4) PIX firewall also supports ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager) version 6.0 and 6.1 with PIX OS 8.0(x). ASDM is a GUI based configuration tool for ASA appliances. This means that to configure PIX or ASA the interface is same and that is ASDM.
5) Cisco official curriculum is only available for SNAF (and not for PIX).
The Cisco PIX Firewall Training is held using Cisco equipment. Following equipment is available for the classes:
