After almost twenty years as an English language instructor, I decided to take some time off to explore a different field. I came to Koenig with little in the way of IT skills apart from a basic knowledge of Windows and some rudimentary Linux skills. As I embarked on the Career Enabler™ LAMP course, I was well aware that, despite my keenness, the learning curve was going to be steep. Thankfully, I had a very conscientious and enthusiastic instructor in Varun Sureka, who taught me for most of my program. Varun has a knack for explaining complex material in a logical, easily understandable way. He was exceedingly helpful and made every effort to ensure that I had a firm grasp of each module before moving on to the next. He was also very patient in answering the seemingly endless stream of questions I had not only about IT topics, but also about Indian culture and tradition. Lastly, he had a good sense of humor, which made classes more interesting.
I learned a tremendous amount of material and passed three exams during my 65-day course. While 65 days is obviously not enough for a novice to become an expert in LAMP web development, I am more than satisfied with the knowledge I have gained and feel I now have a rock-solid foundation upon which to develop my skills further on my own.
From a practical standpoint, my experience at Koenig in Dehradun was positive from start to finish. As I arrived in India two weeks before my course was to start, I chose to arrange my own transport to Dehradun and was met at the bus station as requested. I opted to stay at the Koenig Student Apartment, which was quiet, of ample size, and perfectly comfortable. The staff at the apartment was fabulous and went to great lengths to make the students' stay a pleasant, worry-free one, thereby allowing them to focus fully on their studies. I also appreciated the staff's help in teaching me a few basic Hindi expressions.
At the centre, the staffs were without exception approachable and helpful.
It wasn't all about studying. I knew I'd need a study break after a long day of classes, so I rented a mountain bike early on from Koenig at a very reasonable rate and spent an hour or two each day exploring the area around Dehradun. Among my discoveries were several quiet, picturesque villages tucked away in the hills, a water park and a handful of Tibetan enclaves. With the onset of the monsoon, the surrounding hills and valleys turned all shades of lush green and were beautiful to cycle through.
All in all, I am very pleased with the skills I have acquired and the service provided by Koenig in Dehradun, so much so that I am considering returning in November to do a further course.
