In May 2012, I did the MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Database Development & Implementation and Maintenance Boot Camp with Koenig Solutions in Shimla. The journey from the UK to Shimla was long and tiring, but was executed perfectly - I chose not to use the train from Delhi, but to fly to Chandigarh, taxi to Kalka and catch the train to Shimla (my return journey was simpler - taxi from Shimla to Chandigarh then fly to Delhi). At each stage, I was met as planned and helped onto the next stage of my journey. All were very efficient.
The course was really good. Although I'd paid for a Fast Track class based course, I was the only person on my course - as was everyone else in Shimla while I was there. Private tuition for the price of class based training - fantastic!
My teacher was patient and knowledgeable. His English was clear and easy to understand, and he was easy to get on with. Praveen, the Centre Manager, and all the rest of the staff where friendly and made a great effort to make my stay in Shimla a pleasant experience.
The classrooms where clean and modern, and all the IT worked. The internet was a bit flaky, but that I think was more of a Shimla problem than any fault from Koenig. It also wasn't so bad it couldn't be used - just a bit slow at times.
Shimla is fantastic. It is clean, and not too hot - quite the opposite of Delhi. The top half of the town where the training centre and accommodation has many monkeys, which are fun to watch - just don't annoy them!
The Koenig accommodation, whilst not being the same standard as the more expensive hotels, is clean and comfortable. The balcony on my bedroom had a fantastic view and Ravinder, the apartment manager was always on hand if anything was needed. My advice to any future students in Shimla is to use their accommodation. It is more than adequate for what is required (sleeping and studying), is much more sociable than hotel accommodation as you will spend more time mixing with the other students, and saves a very steep walk up from the Mall every morning before work – although there’s nothing stopping you from taking a walk if you want to!
